Threads | Faraway

Faraway is the namesake embroidery of the Threads Faraway collection, a group of prints and embroideries with an artisanal, hand-crafted quality. A classic stripe is stitched onto a cotton and linen ground with an ikat-inspired, broken edge, so the bands look as if they were dyed and woven by hand rather than ruled, and the embroidery gives them a low relief and a soft sheen against the matte cloth. The repeat is 55 by 35 centimetres, which keeps the stripe generous and relaxed.

The cloth is 55 per cent cotton and 45 per cent linen, 140 centimetres wide, with a 55 centimetre vertical repeat and a 35 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; there is no rub count, so for seating we keep it to occasional chairs, headboards and cushions rather than a family sofa. It comes in a single colourway, Indigo, a saturated blue on a natural ground that sits well with the Faraway earth tones, white walls and dark timber.

We tend to use Faraway for curtains in a bedroom or a study, for a tall headboard where the stitching can be seen at eye level, and for cushions and an occasional chair in a living room of plains. It pairs well with the Meridian Linen, with Bowery Stripe in Spice on a second cushion, and with a textured weave from Quintessential Naturals on the sofa. Allow one full 55 centimetre repeat per drop and match the stripe across widths; ask your maker to place the seams on a stripe boundary so they disappear. Embroidered cloths need a soft interlining on headboards so the stitches do not press through, and the direction of the stitching should be kept consistent across a set of cushions. Line curtains, and dry clean only without ironing directly on the embroidery.
