Threads | Flint

Flint is a finely textured linen weave from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, a group of relaxed cloths built for curtains and blinds rather than upholstery. It has an almost imperceptible 1 centimetre horizontal repeat that gives the surface a fine, granular quality rather than a visible pattern. It reads as close to a plain as a woven linen can, with the texture only showing itself in raking light along a fold or a curtain heading.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 1 centimetre horizontal repeat, small enough to be treated as a plain for cutting purposes. The collection is designed for curtains and blinds rather than upholstery, and there is no published rub count, so we keep it off seating altogether. It comes in two colourways, Ivory and Parchment, both pale, warm neutrals with only a subtle difference in depth between them, close enough to be chosen on texture rather than colour.

We tend to use Flint for full-length curtains in a living room or bedroom, where the fine texture adds quiet depth without introducing colour, and for Roman blinds in a kitchen or bathroom where a flat panel shows the grain at its best. Pair it with a Faraway print on cushions or an occasional chair to give the room a single point of pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the repeat is so small, quantities are simply drop times width, but linen shows any variation along the roll, so cut all the pieces for one window from the same bolt of cloth. Line and interline the curtains for weight and to protect the linen from strong sun, allow a generous hem for natural movement, and dry clean only rather than washing it at home.
