Flow is a textured performance weave from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor Weaves Colour collection, built to bring genuine colour into an outdoor scheme without giving up performance. A fine horizontal grain runs across the cloth, repeating every 14 centimetres, giving it a soft, woven texture rather than a flat, technical surface. It was developed with Winch Design specifically for use in the elements.
The cloth is 75 per cent polypropylene and 25 per cent polyester, 140 centimetres wide, with a 14 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 40,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for loose and fixed upholstery rather than curtains. It comes in three colourways, Cloud, Sand and Earth: Cloud is a soft grey, Sand a warm pale neutral, and Earth the deepest, most grounded of the three.
We tend to use Flow on outdoor sofa cushions and loungers, on a bench in a garden room, and on dining chairs around a terrace table where spills and sun are a daily fact of life. It pairs well with the plainer weaves elsewhere in the Winch Design range and with teak, rope and pale stone. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Keep the horizontal grain running consistently across seats, backs and scatter cushions, and cut pieces for one item from the same batch. Because the cloth can be machine washed cool on a minimum wash, ask your upholsterer for zipped, removable covers where possible; do not tumble dry, bleach or iron it, and use outdoor foam if the cushions are going to live outside for the season.
