Threads | Fossil

Fossil is a woven geometric from the Threads Meridian collection, a group that reworks organic forms and colours from the natural world. The design is worked into the weave rather than printed, so the motif shows as a change in texture and light as much as a change in colour, a little like the impression a fossil leaves in stone. The repeat is 27 by 34.5 centimetres, which is small enough to read as an all-over texture on a curtain and large enough to be seen on a cushion.

The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent polyester, 138 centimetres wide, with a 27 centimetre vertical repeat and a 34.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains; there is no rub count, so we use it for curtains, blinds and cushions rather than seating. It comes in a single colourway, Bronze, a warm metallic brown that reads as a deep neutral in daylight and turns richer under lamplight, which is why we like it in evening rooms.

We tend to use Fossil for curtains in a dining room or study, where the woven geometry gives the window structure, and for Roman blinds in a hallway or dressing room. It also makes a good set of cushions against a plain velvet or linen sofa in a darker tone. Pair it with the Meridian Velvet in Bronze or Slate and let the rest of the room stay plain. Allow one 27 centimetre repeat per drop and match the pattern across widths at the seams; the repeat is small, so the waste is modest. Line and interline curtains so the woven surface hangs flat and the geometry reads cleanly rather than crumpling in the folds, and keep the direction of the weave consistent across a set of cushions; dry clean only.
