Threads | Glide

Glide is a wide-width sheer from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor collection, a companion to Air with a smoother, slightly more fluid hand. It is a fine plain weave that moves easily in a breath of wind, which is exactly what you want on a covered terrace where the curtain is as much about movement as about light. Indoors it does the quiet job of any good voile: it softens hard light and blurs the view without blocking it, and takes the glare off a west-facing window in the evening.

The cloth is 100 per cent acrylic, 290 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. There is no rub count published, as is usual for a sheer, and the page lists it for curtains; as part of the Winch Design range it is suited to a covered outdoor space as well as an indoor window. It comes in a single colourway, Snow, a clean, bright white that keeps the emphasis on the movement of the cloth rather than its colour.

We tend to use Glide on a loggia or a pergola where the curtain will actually move in the air, and indoors as a soft layer behind a heavier curtain or paired with a plain blind. It pairs well with one of the Winch Design textured weaves on nearby seating, kept in a matching neutral. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

At 290 centimetres wide the cloth is railroaded, so the width becomes the drop and you buy by the length of track rather than by widths; there are no seams to plan for on most domestic openings. Let the curtains hang for a few days before the final hem, since sheers move with humidity, and machine wash cool on a minimum wash and cool iron, or dry clean professionally.
