Kaya is the largest-scale design in the Threads Nala Prints collection, a hand-drawn geometric printed on pure linen. The motif is drawn from the tribal architecture and textiles of West Africa and built from bold, simple shapes, but the freehand line keeps it soft, and at 98 by 73 centimetres the repeat is big enough to read as a single composition on a curtain rather than a busy repeat. It is a statement cloth, and it needs room to be seen.
The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 146 centimetres wide, with a 98 centimetre vertical repeat and a 73 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; there is no published rub count, so we keep seating to headboards and occasional chairs. It comes in two colourways, Indigo and Spice: Indigo is the deep blue on a natural ground, and Spice is the warm terracotta version that suits rooms with white walls and dark timber.
We tend to use Kaya for full-length curtains in a living room or a large bedroom, where the scale can be read from a distance, for a tall headboard where the motif sits flat, and on a single armchair as the room's one pattern. It pairs well with the Nala Linen sheers behind it and with a plain textured weave on the sofa in a tone taken from the print. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The 98 centimetre repeat is the thing to plan for: allow one full repeat per drop, match the design across widths, and ask your maker to decide where the motif falls at the heading and the hem before cutting, since a half-motif at eye level will look like a mistake. For a headboard, centre one full repeat. Line and interline curtains to protect the linen; dry clean only.
