Kochi is a heavy jute-and-viscose textured plain from the Threads Quintessential Textures collection, named for the Indian port city long associated with the jute and spice trade. The weave has a coarser, more robust hand than the other textures in the range, thanks to the jute content, giving it real tactile presence on a sofa or a chair. There is no motif, only the natural, slightly nubbly grain of the yarns themselves.
The composition is 31 per cent viscose, 27 per cent jute, 18 per cent polyacrylic, 10 per cent cotton, 10 per cent linen, 3 per cent polyester and 1 per cent nylon, on a 137 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, a genuine upholstery-grade figure, and the page also lists it for curtains. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, mid-toned natural that suits a scheme built around timber and stone.
We tend to use Kochi on a substantial sofa or a pair of armchairs, on a large floor cushion, and on dining chairs that need to stand up to daily use. It pairs well with a printed cushion from the Faraway collection or a plain linen on the curtains, so the texture of the seating has room to be the main event. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, quantities are simple, but jute-rich weaves can vary noticeably in tone between bolts, so order all the cloth for one piece at once and specify that it comes from a single batch. The coarser yarn also means seams should be generously finished and trimmed by an experienced upholsterer; dry clean only, and never bleach or iron it directly.
