Threads | Koutu

Koutu is a soft linen-viscose weave from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, with a fine, even grain and a gentle sheen where the viscose catches the light against the drier linen underneath. There is no pattern, just a quiet, tactile plain that adds interest to a window without asking for attention, and the high viscose content gives it a fluid, almost liquid drape that pure linen does not have on its own.

The cloth is 25 per cent linen and 75 per cent viscose, 137 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. The page lists it for curtains, and the collection is designed for curtains and blinds; there is no rub count, so we keep it away from seating. It comes in a single colourway, Parchment, a warm, chalky neutral that works with most wall colours from white to deep green.

We tend to use Koutu for full-length curtains in a living room or bedroom where the scheme is tonal and the sheen of the viscose adds a little life to the window, and for Roman blinds in a study where the drape shows the weave off well. It pairs well with a heavier textured plain on the sofa and with a print from Faraway on a cushion. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no repeat, so quantities are simple, but keep the weave direction consistent across widths, since the viscose content can catch the light differently depending on which way the cloth runs. Line and interline the curtains for weight, and dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron it directly, and keep steam well away from the surface.
