Lacuna is a heavy textured plain from the Threads Quintessential Textures collection, woven from linen, wool and acrylic with cotton, polyester, bamboo and nylon worked in for body and resilience. There is no motif, only a dense, slightly irregular surface with real depth to it, closer in hand to a substantial tweed than a smooth upholstery cloth. It gives a plain sofa genuine presence in a room.
The composition is 26 per cent linen, 25 per cent polyacrylic, 20 per cent wool, 13 per cent cotton, 6 per cent polyester, 6 per cent bamboo and 4 per cent nylon, on a 130 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, a genuine upholstery-grade figure, and the page also lists it for curtains. It comes in a single colourway, Ivory, a soft, chalky neutral with the natural variation of a hand-finished cloth.
We tend to use Lacuna on a substantial sofa or a pair of wing chairs, on a large footstool, and as heavy curtains where the weight of the cloth helps it hang well. It pairs naturally with a printed cushion from the Faraway collection or a striped accent from Great Stripes, keeping the rest of the scheme tonal and calm. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, quantities are straightforward, but a blend this rich in natural fibres can vary between bolts, so cut all the pieces for one item from a single batch of cloth. The cloth is substantial, so have seams pressed open and trimmed by an experienced upholsterer; dry clean only, and do not bleach or iron it directly at home.
