Threads | Laguna

Laguna is a finely textured weave from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor Weaves Colour collection, developed with Winch Design for furniture that moves between the terrace and the room behind it. The weave carries a tiny, all-over grain rather than a drawn pattern, so from a normal distance it reads as a soft, flecked plain, and up close you can see the two flame-retardant yarns working together to give it body. It has the hand of an indoor weave with the resilience of an outdoor one.

The cloth is 75 per cent polyolefin FR and 25 per cent polyester FR, 137 centimetres wide, with a 1.5 centimetre repeat in both directions, small enough to ignore when cutting. It is rated at 40,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in five colourways, Snow, Cloud, Ocean, Sunset and Dove: Snow and Cloud are the pale neutrals, Ocean is the blue, and Sunset and Dove bring warmth and depth to a larger piece.

We tend to use Laguna on outdoor sofas and daybeds, on dining chairs around a terrace table, and on an indoor sofa in a room that opens straight onto the garden, where one cloth can run through both spaces. It pairs well with a plain outdoor canvas or one of the Winch Design textures on a second seat. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is too small to match by eye, but keep the direction of the weave consistent across every cushion, seat and back, and cut all the pieces for one item from the same bolt. Being flame retardant, it should be washed rather than dry cleaned: machine wash warm on a minimum wash, do not tumble dry, bleach or iron, and use a solution-dyed thread if the covers are going to live outside.
