Threads | Linear

Linear is a hand-drawn line design from the Threads Nala Prints collection, printed on a pure linen ground. As the name suggests it is built entirely from lines, drawn freehand in the spirit of the geometric motifs of West African textiles, so the rhythm is regular but every stroke has a slight wobble that keeps it human. The repeat is 50 by 75 centimetres, which gives it a confident scale on a curtain while still sitting comfortably on a chair.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 149 centimetres wide, with a 50 centimetre vertical repeat and a 75 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; there is no published rub count, so we keep seating to occasional chairs and headboards rather than family sofas. It comes in four colourways, Indigo, Charcoal, Ivory and Teal: Indigo and Charcoal are the graphic ones on a pale ground, Ivory is tonal and quiet, and Teal is the one for a room that needs a colour.

We tend to use Linear for curtains in a study or dining room where the drawn line echoes joinery and shelving, for a pair of occasional chairs in a living room, and for a headboard in a guest bedroom. It pairs well with the Nala Linen sheers at the same window and with a plain textured weave in a warm neutral on the sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one full 50 centimetre repeat per drop for curtains and match the design across widths; the 149 centimetre width often saves a join on a standard window. For upholstery, centre a group of lines on the inside back and seat and keep the direction consistent between pieces. Line and interline curtains to protect the linen from sun; dry clean only.
