Threads | Maris

Maris is a soft cotton-viscose weave from the Threads Fascination collection, with a generous 42 by 35 centimetre repeat that gives the surface a broad, gentle rhythm rather than a fine, close grain. It has a quiet, natural texture with a little sheen from the viscose, and the scale of the repeat means it reads well even across a large expanse of curtain, without ever properly tipping into a definite pattern.

The cloth is 41 per cent cotton and 59 per cent viscose, 137 centimetres wide, with a 42 centimetre vertical and 35 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 9,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek cotton duck test, which is a light-duty figure, so we would keep upholstered pieces to occasional chairs rather than daily-use seating, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Stone, a warm, mid neutral that works with most timbers and stone floors.

We tend to use Maris for full-length curtains in a living room or bedroom, and on an occasional chair or bench cushion where the scale of the repeat can be seen properly close up. It pairs well with a plainer weave from Quintessential Naturals on the main sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 42 centimetre repeat per drop and match the pattern carefully across widths, planning the join where the design is quietest. Line and interline curtains for weight, and given the light rub count, keep any upholstered pieces to occasional use rather than daily-use seating; it is dry clean only, so plan loose covers with that in mind.
