Threads | Meridian Linen

Meridian Linen is the plain linen of the Threads Meridian collection, and one of the cloths the brand uses as a base across several of its ranges. It is a straightforward, medium-weight pure linen with the natural slub and dry handle you would expect, matte in finish and heavy enough to hang well, and it is the plain we reach for when a scheme needs a natural surface that will not compete with a print or an embroidery beside it.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; no rub count is published, so for seating we keep it to occasional chairs, headboards and loose covers rather than a hard-working family sofa. It comes in two colourways, Marble and Putty: Marble is a cool, pale grey-white for rooms with white or grey walls, while Putty is the warmer, slightly darker neutral that suits plaster, cream and timber.

We tend to use Meridian Linen for full-length curtains in almost any room, for loose covers on a pair of armchairs, and as the plain partner to the Nala Prints, the Faraway embroidery or the Meridian Velvet on cushions and chairs. It also makes a good tall headboard in a bedroom with pale walls and a sheer at the window. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no repeat, but linen can shade slightly along the roll, so cut all the drops for one window from a single bolt and keep the direction consistent. Line and interline curtains to protect the linen from sun and give it weight, allow a generous hem for the natural movement of the cloth, and for loose covers ask your maker to allow for slight shrinkage on the first clean; dry clean only.
