Meridian Velvet is the plain velvet of the Threads Meridian collection, woven with a viscose and cotton pile on a cotton ground. The pile is short and dense, with the understated sheen and depth of colour that viscose gives, so it looks rich without being showy and it works as happily in a contemporary room as in a classic one. It is the velvet we specify most often when a scheme needs one solid, saturated surface to anchor it.
The composition is 51 per cent viscose, 40 per cent cotton and 9 per cent polyester on a 140 centimetre width, with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. There are seven colourways: Camel, Oatmeal and Slate are the neutrals, Soft Blue, Fern and Peacock the colours, and Bronze the warm, metallic-toned brown, so there is a shade for most palettes.
We tend to use Meridian Velvet on a sofa or a pair of armchairs where colour is doing the work, on dining chairs in a darker shade, and for heavy curtains in a bedroom or a formal living room where the pile gives the folds depth. It pairs well with a linen or textured weave in a natural tone and with one of the Nala Prints or Great Stripes on cushions. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Velvet has a nap, so every panel on a piece of furniture, and every drop of a pair of curtains, must be cut with the pile running the same way, usually downwards for curtains so the colour reads deepest. Cut from a single bolt to avoid shading, and ask your upholsterer to avoid over-stretching the cloth on curves; line and interline curtains, and dry clean only.
