Mist is a plain performance weave from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor collection, developed with Winch Design for use inside and out. There is no motif at all, just the fine, even structure of the weave itself, which gives the cloth a soft, hazy surface not unlike a brushed cotton, though it behaves nothing like one in the weather. It is the sort of quiet, technical plain we reach for when a room or a terrace needs texture rather than pattern.
The cloth is 100 per cent polypropylene, 139 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat to plan around. The page lists it for curtains rather than upholstery, and being an indoor-outdoor cloth it also suits covered terraces and shaded loggias as well as rooms indoors. It comes in four colourways, Snow, Cloud, Earth and Ocean: Snow is the palest, Cloud a soft hazy grey, Earth a warm neutral taken from sand and timber, and Ocean the one blue in the range.
We tend to use Mist for curtains on a covered terrace or under a pergola, where it needs to survive damp mornings and bright afternoons, and indoors in a bathroom or a sunroom where humidity rules out a natural fibre. It pairs well with the plainer weaves elsewhere in the Winch Design range and with teak or powder-coated furniture outside. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, quantities are straightforward, but ask your maker to cut every drop from the same batch so the colour stays consistent along a long run of glazing. The cloth is machine washable on a warm minimum wash rather than dry cleanable, so specify a lining and a maker who can wash and rehang it; do not tumble dry, bleach or iron it, and let it drip dry on the track where possible.
