Threads | Montana

Montana is a richly textured weave from the Threads Quintessential Textures collection, built from a seven-fibre blend of acrylic, wool, linen, cotton, polyester, bamboo and nylon. The mix gives the surface a deep, almost bouclé-like texture, with small, irregular loops and flecks that catch light and shadow in equal measure, so from across a room it reads as a substantial, richly worked neutral rather than a flat weave. It is one of the more tactile cloths in the collection.

The composition is led by 33 per cent polyacrylic and 24 per cent virgin wool, with linen, cotton, polyester, bamboo and nylon making up the balance, on a 134 centimetre width with a 33 by 33.5 centimetre repeat in the structure of the weave. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, textured neutral that hides marks well.

We tend to use Montana on a main sofa or a large armchair where the texture needs room to read, on an ottoman, and as heavy curtains where the weight and texture both earn their place. It pairs well with a smooth velvet or a printed cushion for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is part of the weave's structure rather than a motif to match, but keep the grain running the same way across every panel and cut all the pieces from a single bolt to avoid variation. The wool content means it should be dry cleaned rather than washed, and a light brushing will keep the pile looking fresh between cleans.
