Threads | Nala Linen

Nala Linen is a wide-width semi-sheer from the Threads Nala Linens collection, woven in a pure linen yarn. It is a plain, open weave with the slubbed, slightly uneven character of good linen, and it filters light rather than blocking it, so a room reads soft and diffused during the day and private at night when the curtains are drawn against a lit interior. At 305 centimetres wide it is designed to be railroaded, so most windows can be curtained without a single seam.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 305 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. The page lists it for curtains; it is a sheer, so it is not a blind or upholstery cloth. It comes in six colourways, Ivory, Putty, Linen, Aqua, Mist and Dove: Ivory and Linen are the classic naturals, Putty is a warmer, slightly darker neutral, and Aqua, Mist and Dove are the soft, cooler tones we use in bedrooms and bathrooms with pale walls.

We tend to use Nala Linen as the inner layer of a two-track window treatment, with a heavier curtain or a blind behind it, or on its own on a long run of glazing in a living room where the width means no joins. It pairs well with the Nala Prints on a chair or headboard and with a textured plain on the sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the cloth is 305 centimetres wide it is railroaded: the width becomes the drop, and you buy the length of your track, times the fullness, rather than a number of drops. Linen sheers move with humidity, so ask your maker to allow a generous hem and to let the curtains hang for a few days before the final hemming; dry clean only, and use a weighted hem so the folds stay straight.
