Threads | Rexford

Rexford is a woven stripe from the Threads Great Stripes collection, its bands built from cotton and jute together so the pattern has real texture as well as colour. The stripe is broad and confident, repeating every 22.5 centimetres across the width, with the jute content giving each band a slightly coarser, more tactile edge than a pure cotton ticking would have.

The cloth is 80 per cent cotton and 20 per cent jute, 135 centimetres wide, with a 22.5 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat, which keeps cutting simple. It is rated at 40,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Indigo, a deep, confident blue that reads as a graphic, tailored stripe against a pale wall.

We tend to use Rexford on a sofa or a pair of armchairs where a stripe needs to carry real weight, on dining chairs, and as curtains in a hallway or a study where the graphic scale suits a more architectural room. Pair it with a plain linen or a heavier textured weave elsewhere in the scheme, so the stripe remains the focal point. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no vertical repeat, quantities are simple, but the horizontal repeat means the stripe should be matched across joined widths and cushion pieces, so plan seams with care on a wide sofa. The jute content makes the cloth slightly coarser to handle, so ask your upholsterer to use a firm interlining on tight corners; dry clean only, and do not bleach or iron it directly.
