Threads | Shoal

Shoal is a textured plain from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor Weaves Colour collection, developed with Winch Design for cloth that moves easily between a covered terrace and the room it opens onto. There is no motif, just an even, softly grained surface that catches light without shouting about it, and the acrylic content gives the cloth a slightly fuller hand than a pure polyester weave. It is a plain built to be leant on, sat on and left out in the weather.

The cloth is 65 per cent acrylic and 35 per cent polyester, 137 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat to plan around. It is rated at a notably high 80,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for the heaviest upholstery use, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in two colourways, Sand and Ocean: Sand is the warm neutral for a terrace that gets full sun, and Ocean is the blue we use where the scheme is built around the water.

We tend to use Shoal on the main outdoor sofa, on dining chairs that get used every day of the season, and as curtains on a covered loggia where the cloth needs to take both sun and the odd shower. It pairs well with a striped or printed Winch Design cloth on the cushions. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, quantities are simple, but keep the weave direction consistent across every panel and cut the pieces for one item from a single bolt to avoid shading. The cloth can be machine washed cool on a minimum wash or dry cleaned professionally; do not tumble dry, bleach or iron it, and use outdoor foam and a solution-dyed thread if the cushions are going to stay out for the season.
