Threads | Sierra

Sierra is a finely textured linen weave from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, a group of relaxed cloths built for curtains and blinds rather than upholstery. A subtle horizontal grain runs across the cloth, repeating every 10 centimetres, fine enough that it reads as a soft, even texture rather than a stripe once it is hanging at a window. It has the dry, slubbed hand typical of good linen, with just enough structure to give a plain curtain some quiet interest without tipping into pattern.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 133 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat to speak of. The collection is designed for curtains and blinds rather than upholstery, and there is no published rub count, so we keep it off seating entirely. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, mid-toned natural that sits between chalk and sand and works with almost any wall colour, from plaster pink to a cooler stone grey.

We tend to use Sierra for full-length curtains in a living room or bedroom, where the fine texture adds depth without introducing colour, and for Roman blinds in a kitchen or bathroom where a flat panel shows the grain properly. Pair it with a printed cushion from the Faraway collection or a heavier textured plain on the sofa, so the room has one point of pattern and one of texture. The repeat is small enough to be almost ignored for quantities, but keep the direction of the weave consistent across joined widths so the horizontal grain lines up cleanly at the seam. Line the curtains, and interline them on a large window, to give the cloth enough weight to hang in soft, even folds; dry clean only, since linen should not be washed or pressed hard at home.
