Threads | Stanton

Stanton is a woven stripe from the Threads Great Stripes collection, a group of essential and decorative stripes for modern rooms. The stripes are woven from a cotton and jute blend, so the jute gives the surface a dry, slightly rustic slub and the cotton keeps it soft to handle; the effect is closer to a ticking or a workwear cloth than to a formal satin stripe. The bands run down the length of the cloth with a 34 centimetre horizontal repeat, so the composition is broad and relaxed rather than pinstriped.

The composition is 75 per cent cotton and 25 per cent jute on a 136 centimetre width, with a 34 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; the abrasion figure is 9,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek cotton duck test, which suits curtains, cushions and occasional seating rather than a heavily used sofa. It comes in two colourways, Indigo and Woodsmoke: Indigo is the crisp blue-and-natural stripe, Woodsmoke a softer grey-brown version for a quieter room.

We tend to use Stanton for curtains in a kitchen or a child's bedroom, for Roman blinds where the stripe can be read flat, and on an occasional chair or a bench cushion in a hallway. It pairs well with the plain Meridian Linen and with a textured weave from Quintessential Naturals on the larger pieces. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no vertical repeat, curtain quantities are simply drop times widths, but the stripe must be matched across the seams and centred on each panel; ask your maker to plan the joins on a stripe boundary so they disappear. For cushions and chairs, decide whether the stripe runs vertically or horizontally before cutting, and keep it consistent across the set; dry clean only.
