Threads | Steppe

Steppe is a textured natural weave from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, blending linen with cotton, acrylic and a touch of cellulose for a surface that is soft, dry and slightly nubbled to the touch. There is no motif, just an even, organic grain that behaves like a fine, hand-loomed cloth while holding its shape better than pure linen alone. It is the kind of plain we reach for when a room wants texture without any pattern at all.

The composition is 55 per cent linen, 18 per cent cotton, 15 per cent acrylic and 12 per cent cellulose, on a 130 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. The page lists it for curtains, and the collection is designed for curtains and blinds; there is no rub count, so it is not one we would use on seating. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, mid neutral that sits happily between chalk white and true beige.

We tend to use Steppe for full-length curtains in a living room or study, where the texture carries the window without competing with anything else in the room, and for Roman blinds in a kitchen. It pairs well with one of the Nala Prints on a cushion or chair, or with a heavier textured plain on the sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no repeat to match, but the weave can shade slightly along the roll, so cut all the drops for one window from the same bolt and keep the grain running the same way. Line and interline the curtains for weight and to protect the natural fibres from strong sun, and dry clean rather than wash, since the cellulose content is not suited to water.
