Threads | Stirling

Stirling is a fine woven stripe from the Threads Great Stripes collection, a group of essential and decorative stripes for modern rooms. The stripe is narrow and closely spaced, repeating every 12 centimetres across the width, so from a distance it reads as a textured plain and only close up resolves into bands; the cotton, linen and jute yarns give the surface a dry, slubbed character, while the acrylic and nylon content adds the strength that makes it a working upholstery cloth.

The composition is 53 per cent cotton, 19 per cent linen, 14 per cent jute, 12 per cent acrylic and 2 per cent nylon on a 132 centimetre width, with a 12 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Taupe, a warm grey-brown stripe on a natural ground that behaves as a neutral.

We tend to use Stirling on dining chairs and a family sofa where the fine stripe hides wear better than a plain, on a window seat, and for curtains in a study or a hallway where the texture adds structure without pattern. It pairs well with the Meridian Velvet on an armchair and with the Nala Prints on cushions. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no vertical repeat, curtain quantities are simply drop times widths, but the stripe should still be matched across seams and centred on each panel. On upholstery, decide whether the stripe runs vertically or horizontally and keep it consistent across seat, back and arms; the 132 centimetre width means an extra join on very wide seats, so plan the layout with your upholsterer.
