Threads | Stratum

Stratum is an abstract textured wallcovering from the Threads Variation Wallpaper collection, a group of individual wallcoverings designed to sit alongside the collection's embroideries and weaves. The design reads like layered rock strata, soft horizontal bands of tone building up the wall, so it behaves more like a textured plain than a pattern and gives a room depth and warmth without a motif. The 53 centimetre repeat keeps the layers moving down the drop.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 53 centimetre vertical repeat and a half-drop match, hung paste-the-wall, which makes it quick to put up and clean to strip later. It comes in a single colourway, Sienna, a warm, earthy orange-brown that reads as burnt terracotta in daylight and deepens under lamplight, which is why we like it in evening rooms and in hallways with little natural light.

We tend to use Stratum on all four walls of a dining room or snug, where the warmth is the point, on the wall behind a bed, and in a downstairs cloakroom. It pairs well with natural linen curtains, dark timber, brass and the Variation embroideries on a chair or cushion; keep the paintwork a warm off-white so the paper does not fight the trim. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

With a half-drop match and a 53 centimetre repeat, allow a repeat's worth of waste on each drop and expect about three 2.4 metre drops from a standard roll, so a 3 metre wall needs six drops, or two rolls; check the roll length with us when you order. Paste the wall with a non-woven adhesive, hang from a plumb line and stagger the drops as the half-drop requires, working from the same batch throughout.
