Threads | Terrain

Terrain is a finely ribbed weave from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor Weaves Colour collection, developed with Winch Design for furniture that has to earn its keep outside as well as in. The surface has a small, textured rib, 6 by 2 centimetres, that reads as a soft, structured grain rather than a pattern, giving a plain cushion or seat a little more presence than a flat weave would. The two flame-retardant yarns keep the cloth stable in strong light and damp air alike.

The cloth is 75 per cent polyolefin FR and 25 per cent polyester FR, 137 centimetres wide, with a 6 centimetre vertical and 2 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 30,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in three colourways, Sand, Sunset and Ocean: Sand is the warm neutral, Sunset brings a soft terracotta into a scheme, and Ocean is the blue we use closest to the water.

We tend to use Terrain on outdoor sofas and daybeds, on a run of dining chairs under a pergola, and indoors on a family sofa or window seat where the rib gives a plain scheme some texture. It pairs well with a plain Winch Design weave or a printed cushion in the same collection. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The small repeat is easy to match, but keep the ribs running the same way across every seat, back and cushion, and cut the pieces for one item from a single bolt. Being flame retardant, it should be washed rather than dry cleaned: machine wash warm on a minimum wash, do not tumble dry, bleach or iron, and ask your upholsterer for a solution-dyed thread if the cushions are going to live outside.
