Tulum Linen is a plain linen weave from the Threads Faraway collection, named for the sun-bleached coastal town on Mexico's Caribbean shore. There is no repeat or motif, only the natural, slightly irregular grain of good linen, which gives a curtain a relaxed, unstudied fall rather than a crisp, formal one. It is the kind of plain we reach for when a room wants texture and light rather than pattern, and it hangs with the easy, slightly heavy movement that only linen has.
The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 138 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat to plan around. The page lists it for curtains rather than upholstery, and there is no published rub count, so we keep it strictly to windows rather than seating. It comes in two colourways, Ivory and Linen: Ivory is the paler, cooler of the two, closer to chalk, while Linen is a warmer, slightly deeper natural that sits close to raw flax and reads well against timber.
We tend to use Tulum Linen for full-length curtains in a living room or bedroom, where the plain weave lets a patterned cushion or a piece of art carry the interest, and for Roman blinds in a coastal or garden room where its relaxed hand suits the setting. Pair it with a Faraway print on cushions or an occasional chair, so the room keeps one calm, unpatterned layer. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, quantities are simply drop times width, but linen varies slightly along the roll, so cut all the pieces for one window from the same bolt of cloth. Line and interline the curtains for weight and to protect the linen from strong sun, allow a generous hem for natural movement, and dry clean only rather than washing it at home.
