Threads | Tundra

Tundra is a textured plain from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, a range of easy, unfussy linen weaves made for curtains and blinds. The weave is open and slightly airy, with a cool, pale character that lives up to its name, and the natural slubs in the linen yarn catch the light in a way that keeps a plain cloth from ever looking flat. There is no motif, just the quiet texture of a good linen doing its own work.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat, which keeps quantities and cutting simple. The page lists it for curtains, and the collection is designed for curtains and blinds; there is no rub count published, so we keep it away from seating. It comes in a single colourway, Ivory, a cool, chalky white that suits a pared-back scheme built on stone, plaster and pale oak.

We tend to use Tundra for full-length curtains in a bedroom or a living room where the scheme wants air and light rather than colour, and for Roman blinds in a bathroom where a flat panel shows the open weave at its best. It pairs well with a heavier textured plain on the sofa or a printed cushion for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no repeat to match, but the open weave can vary slightly along the roll, so cut all the drops for one window from the same bolt and keep the direction of the weave consistent. Line and interline the curtains for weight and to protect the linen from sun, allow a generous hem so the drop can be adjusted later, and dry clean rather than wash to avoid shrinkage.
