Threads | Variation

Variation is the eponymous design from the Threads Variation collection, a woven geometric with interlocking lines built into the jacquard rather than printed on top. The structure repeats every 10 centimetres down the cloth and 44 centimetres across it, so up close it reads as a graphic trellis, while from across a room it settles into a quiet, textured grid. The cotton-rayon blend gives the pattern a soft sheen along every line.

The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent rayon, 134 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre vertical repeat and a 44 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 30,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek cotton duck test, light-to-medium duty, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Indigo, a deep, confident blue that reads almost graphic against a pale wall.

We tend to use Variation for a tall upholstered headboard, where the woven line can be read at eye level, for a pair of occasional chairs, and for Roman blinds in a study or a home office. It pairs well with a plain linen or a heavier textured weave elsewhere in the room, so the geometric stays the only pattern anyone notices. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Match the repeat across widths and keep the weave direction consistent on every panel, since a woven geometric shows any inconsistency more readily than a print would. For occasional upholstery, ask your maker to use a firm, flexible interlining so the structure of the weave does not press through on a tight frame; line and interline curtains for weight, and dry clean only, since the cotton-rayon blend should not be washed at home.
