Threads | Wave

Wave is a printed performance cloth from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor collection. Fine chevron lines move across the surface in a gentle, rhythmic sequence, giving a sense of motion that is structured without being stiff, and the small 10 by 25.5 centimetre repeat means it reads as a lively texture rather than a bold pattern. The base is a recycled polyester developed with Winch Design to take sun, salt air and washing, so it behaves like a proper outdoor fabric while looking like an indoor one.

The cloth is 100 per cent recycled polyester, 127 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre vertical repeat and a 25.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in four colourways, Cloud, Ocean, Marine and Moss: Cloud is the soft grey neutral, Ocean and Marine are the two blues, one lighter and one deeper, and Moss is the green we use against timber and terracotta.

We tend to use Wave on loose covers for outdoor loungers and dining chairs, on scatter cushions for a garden sofa, and indoors on a window seat or a child's bedroom chair where washability matters. It pairs with the striped weaves from the same collection and with plain outdoor canvas. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The chevron should be matched across widths and centred on cushions, and the 127 centimetre width means you will need an extra join on wide seat pads, so plan the layout with your maker. Covers can be machine washed cool on a minimum wash or dry cleaned, then cool ironed; do not tumble dry. Use a solution-dyed thread and outdoor zips so the stitching lasts as long as the cloth.
