Threads | Wonder

Wonder is a woven silk from the Threads Meander collection, with a small, refined pattern worked into the weave rather than printed on top of it. The repeat is 11 centimetres by 36 centimetres, so what you see from across the room is a soft, shifting texture, and only close up does the structure of the design appear. Being pure silk, it has a dry, papery hand and a low lustre that changes with the light, which is exactly what we want at a window.

The cloth is 100 per cent silk, 140 centimetres wide, with an 11 centimetre vertical repeat and a 36 centimetre horizontal repeat. There is no rub count published and we would not put a silk on seating in any case; it is a curtain, blind and cushion cloth. It comes in two colourways, Sea Foam and Smoke: Sea Foam is a pale, watery green that lifts a neutral bedroom, while Smoke is a soft grey that suits a more tailored living room or dressing room.

We tend to use Wonder for full-length curtains in a bedroom or drawing room, interlined so the silk hangs in deep, even folds, and for Roman blinds in a dressing room where it can be seen flat. It also makes a good pair of cushions against a plain wool or linen sofa. Keep the rest of the scheme matte so the silk provides the only sheen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Silk fades and weakens in direct sun, so always line and interline it, ideally with a blackout or thermal lining on south-facing windows, and keep it out of bathrooms. Match the 11 centimetre repeat across widths, cut with the nap running the same way on every drop, and ask your maker to handle it with clean, dry hands; it is dry clean only, and should not be ironed.
