Zanzibar is a large-scale abstract wallcovering from the Threads Faraway Wallpaper collection, printed on a non-woven ground. Loose, irregular shapes are laid out across the width with a hand-cut, informal feel, and the drawing repeats every 80 centimetres, so on a wall it settles into an easy, unforced rhythm rather than a visible grid. The palette follows the rest of the Faraway collection, earth, sand, ocean and mineral tones, which is why it sits so comfortably with timber, stone and linen.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with an 80 centimetre vertical repeat and a straight match, and it is hung paste-the-wall, which makes it quick to put up and easy to strip later. It comes in five colourways, Marble, Parchment, Denim, Ink and Charcoal: Marble and Parchment are the gentle, whole-room options, Denim is the mid-tone, and Ink and Charcoal are best kept for a single wall or a small room you want to feel enclosed.
We tend to use Zanzibar on the wall behind a bed, in a study or on the long wall of a dining room, where the scale can be read across the room. It works well with the Faraway fabrics at the window and with a plain textured weave on the seating. Keep the joinery and skirting simple so the paper does the talking. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
As a straight match with an 80 centimetre repeat you should allow one full repeat per drop for waste, so a 10 metre roll gives three drops on a standard 2.4 metre wall; a 4 metre wall at that height takes six drops, or two rolls. Paste the wall with a non-woven adhesive, butt the joins and smooth from the centre out with a soft brush, and check that every roll is from the same batch before you start.
